Wildlife Photographer of the Year:

Wildlife photographer of the year is the prestigious award given to the wildlife photographers for their extraordinary work in the field. This award is owned by Natural History Museum and BBC wildlife in England. It is an annual competition in which winner receives the title of wildlife photographer of the year. And being the winner of this competition, it is considered as the great professional achievement.

Thousands of wildlife photographers around the world participate in the competition held by Natural History Museum and BBC wildlife. The NHM and BBC wildlife announces the list of finalist and finally a winner.

The exhibition is held every year of winning and highly praised images in the Natural History Museum. Later, these images are toured around the world. It is known as most prominent and significant competition of the photography in the world.

Natural History Museum and BBC wildlife also issue and publish a book of winning entries and runners up as well.

Background of Wildlife Photographer Of The Year:

In 1964, the first wildlife photography competition was held. This competition had three categories and 600 photographers around the whole world. But from 1990 to 2003, this competition was formerly known as BG Wildlife Photographer of the Year. After that, this competition was known as Prudential, Kodak and Shell Wildlife Photographer of the Year as well.

Now, the photographers taking part in competition increased by a large number reach to almost 50,000 participants over 100 countries.   The winner is selected in three rounds by the professional and expert jury.

In the latest wildlife photographer of the year portfolio, the images of the winner are being introduced. There is the tradition of having grand award ceremony in which winners of various categories receive their awards.

The exhibition started after the grand ceremony and it attracts the tourism in Natural History Museum. This Tourism has reached to over five million visitors in Natural History Museum at the time of exhibition.

The main purpose of having this award is to recognize the photography talent and promote it. It has a long history and contributions in the wildlife photography ecology and promotion.

Criteria And Categories:

There are various categories in which photographer can enter their photographs, but the name and number of categories change almost every year. There are high standards of photography being followed in this competition. If judges deem the standards of entries are not high enough, they won’t announce the winner or runners up of following categories.

The criteria is based on the photography subject and topic. Three categories are reserved under 18’s and 3 special awards as well. The title of wildlife photographer of the year is awarded to the overall winner of the competition.

Don Gutoski wins the wildlife photographer of the year award in 2015 for his remarkable photograph title “A Tale of Two Foxes”. He is Canadian photographer and his photograph shows the red fox standing with the corpse of the white fox in its mouth.
